Battlefords North Stars down Melfort Mustangs 3-0

You have to love the symmetry that hockey can provide sometimes. The Stars win 3-0 on the road to make their record on the road this season 3 wins and no losses. Isn’t that great? This game review is pretty much going to write itself. So have a good night I will talk to you later.

Okay so it’s not going to write itself. I still get to do it. Tonight’s blog writing music is: Neil Young.

The North Stars came into this game on the back of a rough outing on home ice the night before. Not necessarily in terms of evfort as much as decision making. Turning pucks over in the neutral zone was what killed them 24 hours or so earlier. Tonight on the road where they have been much more solid the Stars bounced back in the right way.

It was a solid start for the Stars, after a delay while Ryne Keller fixed his bonnet. In fact he borrowed one that was too big while equipment manager/trainer Dale made quick repairs. The Stars controlled play early but took a penalty that they killed but it gave Melfort some life. The Mustangs started to get their feet moving and their forecheck got a bit stronger. Connor Creech made several saves early to keep it scoreless. The top line for the Stars is as good as any I have seen so far in this league. Tatchell, Miller and Johnson’s offensive ability as a unit is impressive. They combined for 8 points last night. I would hazard a guess that the 3 points they combined for tonight feel even better. During a 4 on 4 in the first Zack MacLellan did well to step around a shot blocker and get the puck on net Miller first tipped the puck then whacked away but Wilkins made the saves. Eventually the rebound though fell right to Tatchell and he made no mistake.

Breaden Johnson didn’t get on the scoresheet until early in the second. The Stars PP looked pretty good last night but it struggled a little this evening. So the goals came 5 on 5. And after the first they came early in periods. Kyle Hall’s struggles to get points on the board have been well documented but his play has been good. He just seems a little snake bitten. His shot early in the second hitting Tim Rollins before beating the Mustang’s tender. It was a point for Hall though. His first of the year. Johnson picking up the second assist. As the period wore on the Mustangs weren’t able to get many scoring chances except on the power play. The Stars putting themselves down a man too many times. But the kill was good. All 8 Melfort penalties dealt with. Creech helping in that regard.

Early in the third Hall fed Schwab who was stopped on a 2 on 1 by Wilkins. About ten seconds later Hall found Schwab and he went in 1 on 2. This time the outcome was better for Schwab and the Stars. He used his check as a screen and rifled it high over the shoulder of the goal tender. The Mustangs have several good D men but seem to lack some offensive punch. Bradshaw and Threndyle trying hard to get some chances but nothing Creech couldn’t deal with.

So the bus is on the way home and the Stars are 3-0 on the road this season. That’s good news. Cause they’ve got a lot of road games coming up in the next couple weeks. They’ve also got time to make their home rink a fortress. Also good news? That sound coming from the back of the bus. It’s the sound of a hockey team enjoying the fruits of their labour. Having fun, which is ultimately the point of playing sports, and coming together as a group. It bodes well for the future.

While I am happy for the team and their road win, I have a question maybe you can answer. On the 18th of the month Melfort is scheduled tp play at the Battlefords and at Kindersley.Melville is scheduled to play elsewhere. Do they spit the team or what??
