SJHL Showcase wraps up for the Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars got out of Estevan with two wins under their belt and while the showcase continues into tomorrow the Stars head home with an 8-4-0-1 record in the early going and a good feeling throughout the team.

There wasn’t much time between games for the Stars after playing last night and beating Yorkton 5-2. Battlefords were up bright and early this morning played against their Bauer rivals from Melfort. The Mustangs have a hard working group that gets good goaltending and strong team play. But they don’t get much offense and they only scored 1 goal this weekend in two games. Connor Creech shut the ‘Stangs out the last time he faced them and today he allowed just one goal and it was a shot that hit Brody Luhning and deflected up into the air and fluttered into the Stars cage.

The Stars were already up 2-0 at that point though. Blake Tatchell opened the scoring for the second straight goal and Tanner Schwab scored a beauty skating down the wing to blast past Jesse Wilkins from the face off dot. There was no scoring in the second period as the Mustangs picked u their game a little. The first was all Stars. The second a little more even. The Stars got it going a bit more in the third once again and scored 2 goals to seal the game. But the period started off badly as Boyd Wakelin didn’t return from the locker room after going down late in the second. The Stars also got a 5 minute major power play later in the game after a kneeing major to Godric Tham. Jared Samborski is okay but that was his last action in the game. Braeden Johnson scored the insurance goal on a pass to Tatchell that was tipped into the Mustangs net by their own player. Kyle Hall scored a short handed empty netter to make the final score 4-1. The Stars outshot the Mustangs 42-19 over the course of the game in part because of 8 power plays. The downside is the Stars weren’t able to get a goal on all those man advantages that would have sealed the game sooner.

Wakelin appears to be okay although he is in some pain. And the bus is now on the way back to the Battlefords. The Stars now play 10 of their next 11 on home ice at the Civic Center. They are back at it on Tuesday night against Melfort. I hope to see you at the rink.

I’ll have more on the weekend later on so keep your eyes on the blog later today or early tomorrow.
