SJHL Battlefords North Stars host Melfort Mustangs

This morning in order to wake up a little the music inspiring this blog post is a great mashup or maybe the greatest ever mashup: Thunder Busters

First lets start with a couple of news and notes this morning.

– The Stars have been added to the CJHL’s top 20 rankings that came out on Monday as an honourable mention. The Stars appear on the list for the first time this season. And you have to think if all goes well in the next couple weeks they should hang around that list for a while.

– 10 of the Stars next 11 games are on home ice. A real chance for the Stars to position themselves well for the rest of the season. it is also a chance for the fans to get out to some games and show this team that we appreciate the start that they have had.

– Travis Sparrow is the definition of a defensive D man. A stay at home guy who plays against the other teams top players night in and night out and does a great job for this team. It’s nice when a player like that is recognized. And Captain Sparrow was recognized yesterday as he was named the SJHL’s top D man of the week for his strong play at the Showcase. He is the first Star player to pick up an individual honour this season.

– Connor Creech was named an honourable mention for the top goalie award. The second time this year that has happened. And Creech is currently sitting at second in the league, behind Ty Reichenbach, in GAA and second, to Steven Glass, in save %. The Stars have a real strong goaltending tandem.

– Tanner Quinn will be a guest on The Rock tomorrow morning from 7-9 as par to of the Rock Star promotion. Quinner is a Winnipeg guy and a proud Jets/Bombers fan. So is Perry. So that could be trouble if you don’t want to hear a lot of Winnipeg talk.

– I am loving the point form notes. I am going to be using this format a lot. So easy to think of things to jot down.

Tonight’s game features a Melfort team that sits at 2-9-0-1 so far this season. 3 of those 9 losses have come at the hands of the North Stars. Connor Creech has face the Mustangs the past 2 times the Stars have face Melfort and has allowed just 1 goal in those 2 games. The Mustangs don’t score much, just 20 so far in 12 games, but they work incredibly hard. They have a solid D and good goaltending. If they could find some goal scoring they’d be a decent team. They don’t even need a lot of scoring. Just timely goal scoring similar to what La Ronge get. The Mustangs will be looking for some revenge tonight at the Civic Center.

The Stars will be looking to solidify a strong start to the season. We are approaching the quarter pole of Kevin Hasselberg’s first term in charge of this team and I think he is happy with the progress being made. The team has responded well to the changes the coachign staff wants to make and along with Coach Atcheynum the Stars coaching staff has had a lot of success stamping their style of play on this group. There is still work to be done. But for a new coach to come in late and take over a talented group and get them to respond quickly is impressive. The results on the ice are a nice bonus. This team has a good record and still feels like it has lots of room to improve. Hopefully the fans are encouraged by this start and will start to really pack the Civic Center.

If I get some lineup notes or roster updates over the course of the day I will of course pass them on. And if not I will see you at the game tonight.
