Quiet Day for SJHL’s Top Team: Battlefords North Stars stand pat

The December 1st deadline has come and gone and the Stars have decided to stand pat at this point. While teams around them were strengthening their teams the Stars decided they have the group that they want and are willing to move forward with the players they have on the roster already. I got the feeling that nothing would happen when I spoke to the coaching staff after Tuesday’s win. They like their team and the make up in the locker room. They like the chemistry. And they still have Matthew Sheeran to come back as well. He should be back by the new year. This doesn’t mean the Stars won’t make moves in the future and I have no idea if they were offered trades or made offers themselves. I don’t know what kind of day the Stars coaches had. Were they busy working the phones and just unable to get anything done or were they quietly waiting for teams to approach them? I have no idea.

What I do know is that on paper some other teams closed the gap a little on the North Stars. But the games aren’t played on paper and until teams start to give this team a challenge on the ice I won’t be sure that the moves were worthwhile. The Stars have the top goaltending tandem in the league. The stats bare that out. They have the league’s top player in terms of point. And the league’s two top all around D men are North Stars as well.

They also have the league’s top shutdown D man. And I haven’t even mentioned guys like Braeden Johnson and Kyle Hall. Or role players who know their jobs and perform them very well like Wakelin. Now maybe I am biased because I see these guys every game? That’s a possibility. But even if I am being over the top in my praise these guys are all in the argument as to who is the best in the league at their position and role. How may other teams have that many players that are even in the argument? So yes I think this is a very good team and I don’t mind the lack of moves.

Having said all of that. It’s December 2nd. There is a lot of hockey left to be player. So things can change and hindsight is 20/20. No matter how god they have been up to this point the Stars still have to go out every game, every shift and prove that they are one of the top teams in the league. But right now? This is still the top team in the SJHL. They’ll have their next chance to prove it when they kick off a 3 game road trip tomorrow night.

I will have more on the Melville Millionaires on the blog tomorrow.
