It’s a big one: North Stars look for 14 straight in Humboldt

The next in a string of big games for the North Stars before Christmas is tonight in Humboldt. The Broncos have won 8 of their last ten and are on a 4 game win streak. They’ve picked up points in 7 straight with the only blemish over that stretch being a shootout loss in Flin Flon.

The RBC Cup hosts were always going to be a strong team and despite a somewhat slow start the Broncos are right where we thought they would be. Near the top of the SJHL. Since October 29th the Broncos have only lost twice in regulation. That’s a stretch of games that includes wins over La Ronge, Estevan and Weyburn. The Broncos have a fantastic coaching staff led by Dean Brockman. They get good to great goaltending from the tandem of Matt Hrynkiw and Deven Dubyk . That’s probably the second best tandem in the league and Dubyk is behind only Creech and Hildebrand when it comes to goals against average.

Their D corp is strong and deep. Roach, Backhouse, Ballas, Hudema, the list goes on and on. They have great strength in depth throughout the line up. I have never been anything but impressed by the play of Josh Roach when I have seen him against the Stars. He did make a horrible gaffe that allowed the Stars to win a game in Humboldt thanks to a steal and goal from Tanner Schwab. But he was outstanding in that game up to that point. Backhouse is good at both ends of the ice.

Up front the Broncos are led by Johnston and Ciofli. Taylor Johnson when in the lineup is also a very good player. Ryan Marshall is a player who always impresses and of course the Broncos added Taylor Duzan back on December 1st for a prospect and futures. The Broncos also acquired Mitch Chagnon from Steinbach in the MJHL. Although a quick check of the stats and it looks as though Chagnon hasn’t played yet for Humboldt.

The Stars lead the head to head season series so far having won all 3 meetings. They’ve all been close though and to be honest a couple of the game the Broncos perhaps deserved a better fate. Johnston and Ciofli have been unreal against the Stars. The former has 6 points in 3 games and the latter 5 in 2 games. Blake Tatchell and Brett Miller lead the way against the Broncos for the North Stars in terms of scoring. They both have 5 points in the 3 games between the teams so far this season. The Broncos have struggled at times to cope with the big body of Brett Miller. That’s a matchup to keep an eye on tonight.

That’s gonna be about all for now as I have to run and get on the bus to head to Humboldt. Tonight’s game is live on CJNB/CJNS and online at starting with the SaskTel pregame show at 5:$5. I will talk to you then.
