SJHL Game #40: Flin Flon Bombers at Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars host the Flin Flon Bombers tonight at the Civic Center at 7:30. I will be broadcasting the game as well live on CJNB/CJNS starting with the SaskTel pregame show at 7:15 It’s the first game for the Stars since the winter break and they come in on a 4 game losing streak. The Stars are also no longer in first in the Bauer or SJHL. The Humboldt Broncos hold that distinction although they have played more game than the North Stars.

Recent Game:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Flin Flon has had an even longer break than the North Stars. They haven’t played since December 18th so they have had 15 days off without a game. The last time the Bombers hit the ice they beat Kindersley 6-5.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The North Stars haven’t played since a 3-2 loss to Humboldt just before Christmas. They started to look more like their old selves in that game against a very good Bronco team.

Who’s Hot:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • McCombie. In his last 3 games played the talented forward has 7 goals and 1 assist.
  • D man Dallen Hall is on a 3 game point streak

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The Stars don’t really have anyone who is hot at the moment.
  • Roger Tagoona and Kyle Hall are the closest to hot as they are both on 2 game point streaks.

Players to Watch:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • With Riley Storzuk out of the lineup you will want to watch out for the likes on Penner, Blair, Young and Mysiorek for Flin Flon. All of them are fun to watch. If Storzuk is in the lineup? He’s worth the price of admission. I don’t know his status for tonight.
  • Dylan McCombie. 11th in the league with 43 points and just turned 17 years of age. This kid has a very bright future.

Battlefords North Stars

  • Matt Sheeran. Sheeran has been traveling with the team for a while now. All those kms on the bus and hours spent on the practice ice not being able to get into a game will pay off tonight. Sheeran is expected to be in the lineup tonight for his Stars debut. He’s big and from what I have heard pretty mobile. He is a right handed shot and might see some time on the power play. You don’t want to expect too much from a guy who hasn’t played in months but it will be interesting to see Sheeran for the first time.

Head to Head:

  • Flin Flon 9 @ Battleford 1 (Dec 15th 2011)
  • Flin Flon 3 @ Battlefords 1 (Nov 8 2011)
  • Battlefords 5 @ Flin Flon 4 (SO) (Oct 30 2011)
  • The North Stars are 0-2 on home ice so far this season against Flin Flon. This will be the last regular season meeting between these two teams at the Civic Center this season.
  • They will play each other twice more this season. Both in Flin Flon. And they are back to back on Feb 10th and 11th.

Special Teams:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • PP – 19.3 (5th) PK – 79.7 (9th)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP – 18.5 (9th) PK – 79.3 (10th)

Other Notes:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • The Bombers had just 16 skaters in their lineup for their final game before Christmas. Injuries have hit the Bombers pretty hard yet they are managing to win games in part because guys like McCombie and Mysiorek have stepped up.
  • I will try to find out at some point today what the Bombers injury situation is like and if the Christmas break helped them get healthy. If I can’t get that info before the game I will definitely have it for you during the SaskTel pregame show.

Battlefords North Stars

  • North Stars Captain Travis Sparrow is still suspended. He will be serving game 2 of a 4 game ban tonight. A portion of that suspension is from a hit he threw in that 9-1 drubbing the Stars took at the hands of the Bombers. I believe it was Cole McCaig that Sparrow hit and McCaig hasn’t played since.
  • Sounds like the second unit power play for the Stars will have a slightly different look to it tonight. I will have more on that tonight during the broadcast.

The Big Stat(s):

  • The Bombers have six players scoring at a point a game rate so far this season. (7 if you count Jesse Mysiorek who has 10 points in 8 games with the Bombers since coming over in a trade with Kindersley) That’s pretty impressive offensive balance. If Storzuk and Jay Young had been healthy they’d both be near the top of the league’s point race.
