SJHL Game #55: Battlefords North Stars at Flin Flon Bombers

The Stars will look to build off of last night’s win with the second of a back to back here in Flin Flon.

Last Night’s Game:

  • The Battlefords North Stars pretty much dominated the Bombers last night for the vast majority of the 60 minutes. The Stars actually led 2-0 at one point in the first at I looked up to see the Bombers had 1 shot on goal. So at one point in the first period, probably a little past midway, the Stars had more goals than the Bombers had shots. Blake Tatchell opened the scoring on the power play when he snapped a shot, from the top of the right face off circle, that beat Devin Buffalo between his blocker and his arm. Brett Miller made it 2-0 when he tapped home a goal from the side of the net. Brody Luhning set that up with a “pass” to Miller. Jordan Ethier picked up an assist on that goal as well. The Stars domination didn’t last the full period though as they got themselves in some penalty trouble late in the frame. The Bombers capitalized on their power play when Brandt Wheldon blast home his 8th goal in his last 9 games to make it 2-1 after the first. In that first period the physical play was pretty solid from both teams and the hits that stand out was when Blake Tatchell got destroyed in the open ice by Stefan Virtanen. It was the second hard hit of the period for Tatchell and he went off the ice slowly. He was okay though and returned later in the period. The shots after the first period were 15-8 North Stars.
  • In the second period the shots were actually a little more even but the goals weren’t even. The Stars scored 3 times. Woody Klassen made it 3-1 when he blasted a slap shot low along the ice past Buffalo. Tatchell and Miller, who helped win the face off, picked up the assists on the goal. The kid line then scored to make it 4-1 when he popped home a rebound after some great work by Jared Samborski. Woody Klassen then scored his second of the game on a break away. He took all kinds of hacks and slashes on the way in before making a great move and beating the goalie. At that point the Bombers pulled their goalie and replaced Buffalo with Andy Desautels. It seemed to spark the Bombers who scored just 35 seconds later. Conrad Litke scoring his 13th of the season to make it 5-2 heading to the third period.
  • In the third Tim Rollins scored a goal when his shot/pass deflected in past Desautels to make it 6-2. That was a bit of a fluke goal for the Stars but their strong play earned the Stars some bounces. Brett Penner and Cam Blair teamed up to get the puck to the front of the net and Dyllan McCombie whacked it home late in the final period to make the final 6-3. The score doesn’t fully reflected the level of dominance by the North Stars. The final shots does help illustrate that divide a little as they finished 46-29. Woody Klassen ended up with 2 goals and an assist. Tatchell had one goal and an assist. All 4 lines and all 3 D pairs for the Stars were good last night including the D pair of Kachur and Berg which I thought had a real solid game. They weren’t on the ice for a goal against.
  • The Stars ended up going 1 for 2 on the man advantage. The Bombers went 1 for 5

Who’s Hot:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Brandt Weldon is still on fire. He has an 9 game point streak working right now with 8 goals and 4 assists in that span. Hes a D man so that’s an impressive run. He also got kicked out last night so his name was all over the score sheet.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Woody Klassen. He was all over the ice last night scoring goals and setting them up. He had a very solid game for the Stars. He now has 34 points in 32 games for the Stars this season.

Players to Watch:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Riley Storzuk. Showed flashes with the puck and flashes of his temper as well. He’s the type of player you keep your eyes on when he is on the ice because he can do a lot with the puck and he gets involved in other ways as well.

Battlefords North Stars

  • Mitch Berg and Klay Kachur. A lot of what they do well is the kind of quiet defending that goes unnoticed a lot of the time. Next time you get a chance keep your eyes on these two when they are on the ice together. They keep it simple, make the smart play and control the puck very well. They can also shoot and even lead the rush when the need arises.

Head to Head:

  • Battlefords 6 @ Flin Flon 3 (Feb 11th 2012)
  • Flin Flon 3 @ Battlefords 4 (SO) (Jan 3 2012)
  • Flin Flon 9 @ Battlefords 1 (Dec 15 2011)
  • Flin Flon 3 @ Battlefords 1 (Nov 8 2011)
  • Battlefords 5 @ Flin Flon 4 (SO) (Oct 30 2011)
  • Tatchell now has 7 points in 4 games against the Bombers this season. He missed the 9-1 game at the Civic Center.
  • Brandt Weldon now has 47 PIMs against the Stars this season. He picked up 20 minutes in penalties last night when he was kicked out of the game.

Special Teams:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • PP – 18.0 (9th) PK – 78.7 (10th)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP – 19.2 (5th) PK – 79.9 (7th)

The Big Stat(s):

  • Season series. The Stars with a win tonight will win the season series with the Bombers. They won the season series with La Ronge and tied the season series with Humboldt. Interestingly the only playoff team in the SJHL that will have won their season series with the Stars is Nipawin. The team the Stars are most likely to face in the first round.
