SJHL Playoffs – Bauer Semifinal Game 5: Nipawin Hawks at Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars will host the Nipawin Hawks tonight looking to extend their season. With a win the Hawks would move on to face the Humboldt Broncos in the Bauer final. The Stars are hoping to force a game 6 back in Nipawin Sunday night. It’s been a strange series where the Stars have probably deserved a better fate. But the Hawks somehow just find a way to win games. The North Stars will need to play with the urgency that saw them almost comeback in the third period of game 4.

Recent Game:

  • The Hawks held on for 5-3 win on home ice in Game 4. The Stars scored twice in the third to get within a goal. Somehow they didn’t tie it with the net empty despite a couple chances.

Who’s Hot:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • Eric Peterson. Had a couple assists last game. Now has 4 helpers in 4 games so far this series. Darius Cole has 2 goals and no assists in 4 games but he has played well and seemingly involved a lot more in the play than his numbers indicate.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Blake Tatchell. Had a goal and an assist in the third period of game 4. That’s a warning sign for the Hawks. Tatchell getting hot would be huge for the Stars. He can single -handedly win games for the Stars when on fire. Let’s hope he doesn’t have to win games single-handedly. But getting Tatchell on a roll is a key.

Players to Watch:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • Jeff Datoff. He’s been very impressive on the back end for the Hawks. He logs a lot of minutes and plays against the Stars top players. His continued strong play is a key for Nipawin.

Battlefords North Stars

  • Graham Hildebrand. I’m expecting a big bounce back game from Graham tonight if he gets the start. If I had to guess I would think he is back in between the pipes for the Stars. He’s one of nine 20 year old players who won’t want their junior careers to come to an end.

Playoff Special Teams:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • PP – 2-12 (16.7%) PK – 10-12 (83.3%)

Battlefords North Stars

  • PP – 2-12 (16.7) PK – 10-12 (83.3%)

Other Notes:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • The Hawks Taylor Balog left game 4 with an apparent leg injury. They are without long term absentees Stu Holland, Tad Kozun and Jesse Williamson. We haven’t seen Brady Zerr since game 2 and Justin Waskewitch isn’t 100% and has missed games in this series. Yet it hasn’t seemed to phase the Hawks. It just shows what a great job Doug Johnson has done with that team. You might not like it as a Stars fan but I do think you have to respect the Hawks determination and the way they have fought through some injuries.

Battlefords North Stars

  • For the Stars it’s pretty easy. Just win tonight’s game. That’s all they can do at this point. You can’t win the series tonight. So there’s no point in trying to win the series tonight. Just focus on winning game 5 on home ice. There will be a big crowd at the Civic Center and once they get behind the Stars that will give them a huge boost.

The Big Stat(s):

  • Screw stats at this point. Just win. That’s the bottom line for the North Stars. Just find a way to win. Out ‘Nipawin’ the Nipawin Hawks. Find a way to extend the series no matter what it takes.

Here’s hoping the Battleford Boys are given the chance to win it for their home town tonight. Tatchell, Miller, Wakelin, Schwab, Forbes, Keller, Samborski get her done!!!

  3. way to go Stars – the skaters did their part – but it was me wearing my signed Creech shirt that turned the tide, and I didn’t even know he was getting the start when I put it on. The Battleford Creecher did himself and the team proud. When you want to make a wave you have to throw a bigger rock into the water and the Northstars did that tonight, right from the coaches on down to every player on the ice. Good game boys – now you know what it takes – give ’em hell.
