The North Stars held their annual spring camp over the weekend at the Civic Center. Coach Hasselberg, Atcheynum and several other scouts and helpers were on hand to evaluate the 50 or so players who made their way to the Battlefords for the camp. Some coming from as far away as Pittsburgh. There were several players who stood out as very noticeable from the scrimmages I saw. But to be honest I only recognized about 5 or 6 names from the rosters. There were several North Stars out to skate including Robbie Newton, Ryne Keller, and Dillon Forbes. And of course several midget AAA Stars were on hand including Blair Mahom, Brody Tatchell and Carter Danczak. I also kept my eye on Yorkton Harvest product Jake McMillen who I thought looked pretty good during the games I watched. He was picked up in a deal with the Yorkton Terriers around Thanksgiving. McMillen is a 1995 so could return to play another year in the SMAAAHL next season but will have a chance to make the team in training camp.
There were some other players who looked good including a couple goalies but as some of them are basically “free agents” and can and probably are being recruited by several programs I am not going to talk about them too much on this site right now. Once the North Stars start making some signings after the RBC Cup then I will be able to talk about if they were at camp and how they looked. There were a couple of talented young D men at camp and if the Stars can land one or two of them the camp will have been a huge success.
The purpose of the camp, as Coach Hasselberg told me the other day, is not just for kids to be seen by the North Stars but also for the North Stars to show off their program to potential recruits.
