SJHL Game 4: Notre Dame Hounds at Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars host the Notre Dame Hounds tonight at the Civic Center. After 12 days between the games the Stars will be anxious to get back on the ice and start playing games again. I imagine the players are sick of practice. But in the last two weeks the Stars will have had some time to work on their structures, break outs, special teams and a lot of other aspects of their game. Justin Waskewitch is expected to be in the lineup tonight. And the Stars are pretty much healthy or on the verge of being healthy. So while the long layoff wasn’t ideal it also was a good time to get some stuff done.
By the way for those who missed it yesterday Kyle Schmidt was re-called to the Saskatoon Blades. The Blades acquired Adam Kambietz in a trade and had 1 too many over age players. They had to get down to just 3 20 year olds by midnight last night. So they place 20 year old D man Connor Cox on waivers and brought Schmidt back into the fold. I have no idea how long he will be with them or if he will be back with the Stars are at all.

Recent Game:

Notre Dame:

  • The Hounds most recent game was a loss at the hands of the Melville Millionaires. There’s no shame in losing to that team this season. The Hounds are 2-2-0-1 so far this season. They’ve basically been alternating a win and a loss.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The North Stars skated to a 3-1 win over the Melfort Mustangs last time out.

Players to Watch:

Notre Dame:

  • Carson Grolla. He was the D man of the year last year in the SJHL. He’s the Hounds best player and should be watched at all times. A great player and a dynamic offensive player at times as well.
  • Brandon Millin. 4 goals in 5 games so far leads the Hounds offensively.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Justin Waskewitch. The new guy has been with the Stars for a few days and has some practices under his belt. Hasn’t seen game action this season as of yet. The Stars power play is 4-8 on home ice so far this season. Waskewitch will see plenty of time on the man advantage. It will be interesting to see how he does in his first game.

Head to Head (Last Season)

  • The North Stars went 4-0 last seaso against the Hounds including a win in Wilcox when the Stars didn’t play well but gutted out a win at the end of a road trip. It was part of one of their lengthy win streaks. Brody Luhning scored the tying goal in the third and the Stars won in a shootout.

Special Teams:

Notre Dame:

  • PP: 4-38 (12.9%) PK: 19-23 (82.6.%)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 5-23 (21.7%) PK: 14-20 (70%)
