SJHL Game 6: Battlefords North Stars at Flin Flon Bombers

Tonight should be a whale of a game between the SJHL’s top team and a North Stars team that is coming off a nice come back win last night. The Bombers are 6-0 to start the season. They were picked by many to be the top team in the league this season. They looked great on paper and so far have looked great on the ice as well. Mike Reagan and his staff have done a nice job putting this team together and getting them to perform. Only Melville has scored more than the Bombers and in terms of goals per game it’s basically even between those two teams.

Flin Flon has benefited from a lot of home games so far this season. Tonight will be their 6th in a row at home. The played on the road in Melfort for the first game of the year and are now on a run of 7 straight at home. But it’s only an advantage if you win those games and that’s what they have done.

Josh Roach, Riley Storzuk and Dylan Balaski are just some of the players who are leading the Bombers to their strong start. The North Stars will have a chance tonight to make a statement to the rest of the league that they are going to be a top team this year. Handing the Bombers their first loss of the season, and doing it in Flin Flon, would be a nice early season statement. It should be a great game tonight.

Recent Game:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • The Bombers haven’t lost yet this season. Their most recent game was a 5-4 win over Kindersley. The Klippers put up a strong fight against the Bombers but fell just short in their come back attempt. Boehm, Balaski and Storzuk combined for 7 points in that game.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The North Stars skated to a 5-2 win over the Notre Dame last night.

Players to Watch:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Josh Roach. The former Humboldt Bronco has had a great start to the season so far. He has been playing forward for Flin Flon and has 12 points in 6 games. Just 1 goal though so he is someone to watch as he is looking to set up his team mates.
  • Brett Boehm. The Martensville native was a top scorer in the midget AAA league last season playing for Beardey’s. And he hasn’t skipped a beat this season with 6 goals and 9 points so far in 6 games. He already has a scholarship to the NCAA and I am looking forward to seeing him in action.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Kyle Hall. He’s been what the Stars need him to be so far this season. Leading the way with 4 goals and 4 assists in 5 games. Hall is a great two way center and scoring at this rate is a real nice start to a big season for Hall.
  • Robbie Newton. Had a good game last night again. Has added a little more offense to his game and was unlucky not to pick up an assist on a nice set up last night. I want to see Newts have a big game against Flin Flon and maybe get on the score sheet.
  • Josh Betinol. Looked good last night on a line with Austin Evans and Blake Young. Betinol is fun to watch and I think he is close to breaking out offensively and potting his first of the year.

Head to Head (Last Season)

  • The Stars and Bombers split 6 games last season with the Stars winning twice in a shootout. Which means Flin Flon picked up points in all but 1 of the games. And they did lay a 9-1 pasting on the Stars just before Christmas last season. The Stars won 2 of the 3 games in Flin Flon.

Special Teams:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • PP: 8-23 (33.3%) PK: 19-23 (82.6.%)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 9-33 (27.2%) PK: 19-26 (73.1%)

The Big Stat:

This is all about the special teams. The Stars PK is no longer at the bottom of the league. But if you take out that Melville game it’s been very good. The Bombers special teams have been great. Both teams have fantastic power play numbers. So tonight’s game could hinge on who plays better on the PK and/or who stays out of the box.
