SJHL Game 16 – Humboldt Broncos at Battlefords North Stars

The North Stars will be looking to get back to .500 with a win tonight at the Civic Center. The Broncos are just 3 points behind Flin Flon for first in the SJHL’s Bauer division. The Stars can actually catch Nipawin if the results go the right way. But it’s early in the season and the standings aren’t really that important right now. More important for the North Stars is that they take another step forward.

The Broncos power play comes into the game in top spot in the SJHL. This will be a great chance for the North Stars special teams to bounce back after a tough day at the office.

Recent Games:

Humboldt Broncos:

  • The Broncos skated to a big 5-4 win over Melville on Sunday in their last game. It’s been a bit of a streaky season so far for the Broncos. They have two 3 game losing streaks this season. They also have an 8 game winning streak to their credit as well.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The North Stars are coming off a nice 6-4 win over Yorkton in a game that they dominated 5 on 5. The special teams play is a concern though after the Terriers went 4 for 8 on the power play.

Players to Watch:

Humboldt Broncos:

  • Matt Hrynkiw. The Broncos goalie is third in the league in goals against average and is working on another very good season. The North Stars know how good Hrynkiw can be after last year’s playoff meeting.
  • Kam Ballas. Played with Josh Roach last season on the Broncos top D pair. Now that Roach is gone it is up to Ballas to carry the load and he is doing it well so far. Logan Sproule is another D man who is important for Humboldt but Ballas is the man.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Kyle Hall and Braeden Johnson. I ran into Hallzy and Johnny at Tim Horton’s last night along with their roommate Cody Bird. All three billet together. Hall and Johnson said they feel like their line is starting to click again along with Brandon Long who sniped a beauty against Yorkton. It would be great to see that line get rolling.

Head to Head:

  • On October 17th the Broncos scored twice in the third period to come from behind and beat the North Stars. The Stars got 3 points each from Josh Betinol and Jake McMillen. Austin Evans was on that line that night and he had 2 points. The Stars didn’t get any offense from any other line and that may have cost them the game. That was a game that came shortly after a pair of losses in Flin Flon and La Ronge.

Special Teams:

Humboldt Broncos:

  • PP: 17-66 (25.8% – 1st in SJHL)
  • PK: 59-68 (86.8% – 3rd in SJHL)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 17-84 (20.2% – 5th in SJHL)
  • PK: 57-76 (75% – 11th in SJHL)
