They’re Back!! SJHL Game 34: Weyburn Red Wings at Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars return to the ice tonight for their first game since before Christmas. The Stars last game was a 6-0 loss to Humboldt in a game that the Stars just weren’t ready to play. But that’s only happened a few times so far this season. And every time the team has played a really poor game they’ve always found a way to respond in the next game.

The Red Wings have been playing a little better of late and are closing in on a playoff spot in the south. Legendary coach Dwight MacMillan has resigned, officially, and since then the team has won a couple in a row. I’m not sure those two things are related but it is sad to see MacMillan not in the SJHL anymore. His career is incredible no matter how you measure it and he will be missed.

The last time these two teams met both goalies picked up a shutout as the Stars won 1-0 in a shootout. Luke McColgan scored the game winner and Casey Parker picked up his first career SJHL shutout.

Recent Games:

Weyburn Red Wings:

  • The Wings have won two in a row but both wins have been over the Estevan Bruins including a 5-4 win on New Year’s Day. The Bruins are currently the team in front of the Wings in the standings so now Weyburn is just 2 points back of a playoff spot and they have played a fewer game than Estevan. But tonight should be more of a test for Weyburn.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Lost 6-0 to Humboldt just before Christmas. It was one of the Stars most lackluster performances of the season. There were some players and some shifts where the Stars looked to be improving and they did hit iron 3 times. But coach Hasselberg made no excuses after the game when he said the team just didn’t show up ready to play. Humboldt deserved the win and were the better team. But the Stars have shown more than once this year that when they put in a bad performance they find a way to bounce back.

Players to Watch:

Weyburn Red Wings:

  • Ryan Ostertag. Miguel Pereira is leading the way for the Wings but the last time Weyburn faced the North Stars they didn’t have much other offense. Only Pereira looked like a threat. Ostertag didn’t play in that game. The talented forward had a goal in Weyburn’s January 1st win over Estevan. With him back in the lineup the WIngs are much more of a threat offensively.
  • Sam Williams. He’s been out a lot this season and basically you can copy what I wrote about Ostertag and apply it to Williams. He had an assist on January 1st. And now has 19 points in 14 games this season.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • I am not sure about his one. I spoke with coach Hasselberg on the phone this morning but we didn’t have very long to talk and I only had time to ask a couple of quick questions. Which means I didn’t get into specific players. The Stars were banged up before the break with Matt Sheeran, Joren Johnson, Tanner Quinn and Connor Creech injured. Other guys were playing hurt. I don’t know the status of each individual guy for tonight’s game. But coach did say that they would have to use affiliates again tonight.

Head to Head:

  • Weyburn 0 @ Battlefords 1 (Dec 15 2012)
  • Battlefords 2 @ Weyburn 5 (Oct 28 2012)
  • Keenan Martens was leading the Stars with 2 assists in 2 games against the Wings but he is no longer with the team. And no other player has more than a point. Ryan Ostertag with 2 points in 1 game this year against the Stars leads the Wings.

Special Teams:

Weyburn Red Wings:

  • PP: 17-133  (12.8% – 10th in SJHL)
  • PK: 127-160 – 33PPG against (79.4% – 10th in SJHL)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 31-156 (19.9% – 5th in SJHL)
  • PK: 132-166 – 34PPG against (79.5% – 9th in SJHL)
