SJHL Game 36: Nipawin Hawks at Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars host the Nipawin Hawks for the second half of a home and home series. The Stars won the first leg 2-1 on Saturday night. Both Brody Luhning and Tanner Quinn have begun 2013 on two game goal scoring streaks. They will look to continue those streaks this evening at the Civic Center.

Connor Creech was excellent on Saturday and has been rolling along with 2 wins and just 2 goals allowed to start the new year. Creech made 37 saves to help the Stars beat the Hawks. Perhaps due to expectations, or perhaps a bit of a slow start, it seems like Creech hasn’t been at his best. But it’s worth noting that his numbers this season are now better than they were last season. And they continue to get better. The North with Hrynkiw, Buffalo and Jones is stacked with goaltending. With Creech in net the Stars have a goalie just as good as that trio.

Tonight the interesting area for the Stars will be on the backend. They should get one or two guys back into the lineup tonight and have more of an established veteran look to the defense. The youngsters have performed very admirably this season. But as we get rolling towards the playoffs it would be nice to see the Stars get healthy at the back.

Recent Games:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • Lost 2-1 to the North Stars on Saturday. Before that the Hawks had won 4 in a row.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The Stars beat the Hawks with goals from Brody Luhning and Tanner Quinn on Saturday.

Players to Watch:

Nipawin Hawks:

  • Eli Litchenwald. Now that he has his fist game back in the SJHL behind him let’s see how the big forward does tonight at the Civic Center.
  • Jesse Williamson. The 6’3 191 pound 20 year old D man was solid against the Stars on Saturday. He won’t ‘wow’ fans but he is big, strong and very good in his own end. If you like watching good defensive hockey then Williamson is worth keeping an eye on.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Brody Luhning and Tanner Quinn. Both guys have scored a goal in each of the Stars 2 games so far in 2013. Luhning now leads the North Stars in scoring.
  • Josh Betinol. Hasn’t had a point yet in 2013. Betinol is still 3rd on the North Stars with 11 goals and 23 points so far this season. He’s close to having a big break out game.

Mike, I heard on the broadcast last night that Kevin said the stars are getting Schmidt back. When will he be back playing?

    • I have no idea. I think he only recently started skating. He hasn’t been cleared to play. Once he is clear he will come to the Battlefords.
