SJHL Game 37: Estevan Bruins at Battlefords North Stars

EDIT: Tonight’s game has been cancelled. No make up date has yet been scheduled.

The Battlefords North Stars will be looking for a little revenge tonight at the Civic Center. They felt they played a poor game in Estevan earlier in the season when the Bruins skated to a 4-1 victory.

The deadline has now passed for roster moves and the North Stars stuck with what they had. The coaching staff has a lot of confidence in this group and they rewarded them for their strong play of late. Now the Stars can focus on playing hockey and gearing up for the stretch drive and the playoffs.

Connor Creech and Matt Sheeran are both day to day and will return to the lineup basically whenever they are ready to go. Creech will likely back up Casey Parker tonight.

Recent Games:

Estevan Bruins:

  • Lost 9-4 to Melville in their most recent game back on Saturday.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The Stars lost to Nipawin 4-1 in their most recent game and had a poor first period. They will look to bounce back tonight with a big response game. The deadline has passed and this is the team the Stars will have moving forward. Guys can stop thinking about their role on the team and now focus on playing hockey. .

Players to Watch:

Estevan Bruins:

  • Dylan Smith. He had 74 points with the Bruins last season. Yesterday the Bruins brought Smith back from an American junior A league out East. I am not sure if he will be in the lineup tonight. But if he is it will be interesting to see how quickly he fits back into the Bruins lineup.
  • Cole Olson. Olson was great last season with Smith on his line but hasn’t been as good this season. He’s a slick player though who can provide a lot of offense for Estevan when he is on his game.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Braeden Johnson. The Stars forward has been solid lately but not getting the rewards. I thought he deserved a couple of assists in his most recent games and should have scored against Nipawin. Johnson has had some chances to score that he hasn’t converted of late. He’s due for a big game.
  • Casey Parker. With Connor Creech being cautious with his groin injury Parker will likely get the start tonight. He played well against Nipawin and made a couple of key saves.

Head to Head:

  • Battlefords 1 @ Estevan 4 (Oct 26th, 2012)
  • Darcy DeRoose had 2 goals for the Bruins and Hudson Morrison had a pair of assists. Luke McColgan scored the Stars only goal.

Special Teams:

Estevan Bruins:

  • PP: 16-140 (11.4% – 12th in SJHL)
  • PK: 113-134 (84.3% – 5th in SJHL)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 32-168 (19% – 5th in SJHL)
  • PK: 142-177 (80.2% – 8th in SJHL)
