SJHL Game 42: Battlefords North Stars at Weyburn Red Wings

The North Stars have had almost a week off since their last game Saturday night in Kindersley. As a result of that game the Stars will be without Blair Atcheynum and Ben Greenaway this weekend as both were suspended for 3 games. The Stars have only lost once in regulation so far in 2013 but have lost in a shootout twice and in overtime. They are 4-1-1-2 so far in this calendar year.

Currently the Stars are 3 points behind Nipawin in the standings and can move within 3 points of Flin Flon if they were to win their games in hand. The Bombers are down south this weekend as well. They have already beaten Notre Dame and while the Stars are in Weyburn tonight Flin Flon is in Estevan and then the two teams will switch places. It’s an important weekend but at this point in the season every game and every weekend is going to be huge.

Recent Games:

Weyburn Red Wings:

  • A 4-3 loss on the road in Yorkton was the Wings most recent game. They have won just once in their last 7 games a stretch that began with a 5-1 loss to the North Stars at the Civic Center.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Lost 4-2 in a shootout in Kindersley.

Players to Watch:

Weyburn Red Wings:

  • Perreira, Ostertag and Williams. All 3 are over a point a game so far this season and combined they have 44 goals. Only one other Weyburn player has double digit goals. Lane Harbor has 12.
  • Carter Struthers. A big and physical D man who can dominate in his own zone. He also has a very solid 16 points in 23 games played this season.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Luke McColgan. Hasn’t had a point now in 5 games since picking up an assist against Nipawin on January 8th. His last goal came against Weyburn in that 5-1 win at the Civic Center. McColgan has been playing well of late and wracking up the hits. Perhaps tonight is the night he gets the rewards on the score sheet that his play has deserved.
  • Kyle Schmidt. Not sure if or when he will play on this road trip. But Kyle was sent to the Stars this week by the Saskatoon Blades. That should mean he is healthy and ready to get back on the ice. The Stars have a lot of depth on D so how and when they are all used will be something to watch for the rest of the season.

Head to Head:

  • Weyburn 1 @ Battlefords 5 (Jan 4 2013)
  • Weyburn 0 @ Battlefords 1 (Dec 15 2012)
  • Battlefords 2 @ Weyburn 5 (Oct 28 2012)
  • Jake McMillen leads the Stars in head to head scoring against the Red Wings with 3 points in 3 games played. Casey Parker is 1-1 against the Wings with a shutout while Connor Creech is 1-0 with just 1 goal allowed in his only game against Weyburn this season. Ostertag and Struthers each have 2 points in 2 games against the Stars.
