SJHL Game 46: Flin Flon Bombers at Battlefords North Stars

It’s a big game tonight at the Civic Center with the Flin Flon Bombers in town. Both teams are coming off of losses last night and not much has separated these two teams this season. Each has won 2 of the 4 games head to head. The Stars have won the 2 most recent contests. 3 of the 4 games have been decided by just 1 goal. The other was a 3-1 win for the Bombers. Like I said not much between these two teams.

In the standings there are 5 points between them and that is part of what makes tonight huge. With a win the Stars would be 3 back. A loss and they would be 7 back. That’s a 4 point game. Of course overtime would change all of that but the point is that the regular season is into it’s final month, the standings are extremely close and winning these head to head games against team above the Stars in the standings is key.

Recent Games:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • The Bombers were shutout last night in Humboldt 3-0 the final score. The last time the Bombers were shutout, 1-0 by La Ronge, they followed up with a 7-1 win. They are a very good, dangerous team and they will be angry coming into tonight’s game.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • The North Stars lost 2-1 to Melville last night at the Civic Center. I thought after about the first 10 minutes of the first period the Stars were the better team and they had plenty of chances in the game. Coach Hasselberg suggested on the post game show that the Stars outchanced the Mills and I have no doubt that’s true. But only Kyle Hall found a way to beat Alex Wakaluk in the Melville goal. Both he and Connor Creech were outstanding in last night’s game. It really was a great duel between the two goalies. But the one criticism of the North Stars is how many shots Wakaluk saw. That’s something I expect to see chance tonight. One thing we know about a Coach Hasselberg coached team is that they respond well after a loss and they make adjustments.

Players to Watch:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Josh Roach. The  North Stars have done a pretty good job against Roach this season. He has 3 points in 4 games head to head. But he leads his team in scoring and is a constant threat offensively. He has 8 goals and 14 assists on the power play. The Bombers PP is tops in the league and Roach is the main reason.
  • Dillan McCombie. Having a slightly down season compared to last year. But he always seems to be involved against the Stars and 4 of his 16 goals are game winners. So he is scoring important goals this season.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Jake McMillen and Austin Evans. McMillen has just 1 goal and no assists against the Bombers this season. Evans has an assist and no goals. They are two of the North Stars most consistent scorers and look dangerous whenever they are in the attacking zone. It’s a big game tonight and these are two of the players who can step up tonight and give the Stars an even better chance to win.
  • Robbie Newton. He and his linemates were solid last night. I liked the way they cycled the puck and they created some chances. They earned their team at least 1 power play during the game and the PK was for the most part excellent. Newton has been a great leader for this team this year. And in big games like tonight leadership is important. The North Stars have a good group of leaders but Newton will be a key tonight.

Head to Head:

  • Flin Flon 2 @ Battlefords 3 (Dec 19 2012)
  • Flin Flon 1 @ Battlefords 2 (Nov 27 2012)
  • Battlefords 1 @ Flin Flon 3 (Nov 9 2012)
  • Battlefords 4 @ Flin Flon 5 (Oct 12 2012)
  • Braeden Johnson leads all scorers head to head with 5 points in 4 games against Flin Flon. All 5 points for Braeden are assists so far. Dillon Forbes and Kyle Hall each have 2 goals this season against the Bombers. Brett Boehm is the leader for Flin Flon with 4 points in 3 games versus the Stars.

  • PP: 40-180 (22.2% – 1st in SJHL)
  • PK: 159-187 (85% – 3rd in SJHL)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 42-221 (19% – 6th in SJHL)
  • PK: 177-220 (80.5% – 9th in SJHL)
