SJHL Game 48: Battlefords North Stars at Flin Flon Bombers

The North Stars lost 4-2 to Flin Flon last time these two teams met. The Bombers scored twice in the third to win. A power play marker and an empty netter. Josh Betinol and Travis Marit scored for the Stars.

Connor Creech has a 2.66GAA and a .925 save percentage in his last 3 games. But they’ve all been losses for the Stars number 1 goalie.

After the La Ronge game on Tuesday Coach Hasselberg called this game a statement game for the North Stars. It’s a big game in terms of the standings and in terms of the North Stars needing a big win over a divisional rival. Should be a beauty tonight.

Recent Games:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Haven’t played since beating the North Stars 4-2 last weekend.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Beat La Ronge 5-2 on Tuesday night. That win snapped a 3 game losing streak for the Stars and was a nice bounce back game. It was a step in the right direction. Tonight’s game needs the Stars to take another step in that direction.

Players to Watch:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • Riley Storzuk. Has 10 points in his last 7 games including 4 goals. When he is healthy and in the lineup he’s been terrific and he’s played in 14 straight games so seems to have his early season injuries troubles behind him.
  • Dylan Balaski. Has been in and out of the lineup of late but when he is in the lineup he is fun to watch and has been very good for the Bombers.

Battlefords North Stars:

  • Kyle Schmidt. Has 3 assists so far this season with the North Stars. But none since his return to the lineup. The North Stars are looking for offense by committee this season and that includes getting contributions from the defense. Just as they got against La Ronge. Schmidt can and will be a big part of that and he is at the point now where he has some games under his belt. He should be back into game shape and will only get better as they games go on.
  • Travis Marit. Credited with a goal and an assist last game but I think he might have scored twice. Either way he has 4 points in his last 6 games. Marit and his linemates bring a lot more to the game than just offense but when they are also scoring they make the North Stars even more dangerous.

Head to Head:

  • Flin Flon 4 @ Battlefords 2 (Feb 2 2013)
  • Flin Flon 2 @ Battlefords 3 (Dec 19 2012)
  • Flin Flon 1 @ Battlefords 2 (Nov 27 2012)
  • Battlefords 1 @ Flin Flon 3 (Nov 9 2012)
  • Battlefords 4 @ Flin Flon 5 (Oct 12 2012)
  • The Bombers are up 3-2 in the season series so far this season and so the Stars will be looking for a season split with a win tonight. The Stars haven’t won a game in the Whitney Forum this season. They went 2-1 at home against Flin Flon but are 0-2 so far in Manitoba.
  • Braeden Johnson with 5 assists in 5 games leads the Stars in points against the Bombers this season. Rookie Brett Boehm is tops for Flin Flon with 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points in 5 games.

Special Teams:

Flin Flon Bombers:

  • PP: 41-184 (22.3% – 1st in SJHL)
  • PK: 162-190 (85.3% – 3rd in SJHL)

Battlefords North Stars:

  • PP: 43-228 (18.9% – 6th in SJHL)
  • PK: 181-226 (80.1% – 9th in SJHL)

My pick is 6-2 Bombers and Stars will fade down the stretch. The focus and dedication to winning is not there in this lineup-too bad cause it could be. The tough aren’t going when the going gets tough-proof is the record against teams with equal or better than record than the Stars. Hope they prove me wrong.

Your wrong, what you have to realize is the stars are the youngest team in the league and they are still very competitive. Very good club.
