Today is Friday. It’s the start of the Labour Day long weekend. And it’s the return of hockey in the Battlefords. So pretty much the greatest Friday of all time.
North Stars training camp begins today at the Civic Center with fitness testing and some on ice work. The Midget AAA Stars will once again be holding their camp in conjunction with the Stars and the weekend will culminate with a traingin camp/rookie game in Kindersley Sunday.
I don’t have a lot of time this morning as I am covering both news and sports on CJNB/CJNS, Q98 and The Rock. Our news director, Geoff, is on holidays and so I am filling in for him. But a lot of time in the winter when the North Stars play on the road on a week day or a Sunday and the bus doesn’t get back until early in the morning it is Geoff that covers for me so I can sleep in. So I don’t mind dragging myself out of bed at 3:45am to get in and prepare both news and sports reports.
I know this first weekend is going to be a bit hectic with lots of players in town. The North Stars will get a look at some young guys that they have in the pipeline, some of whom will play for the AAA Stars this season, and I know from last season that the North Stars see this weekend as a great oportunity to show off their program, this community, their staff and all of the great aspects of the team. It’s not just about young players trying to make the North Stars. It’s about the team selling their program.
The North Stars also keep an eye on what the players are like off the ice as well as on it. We’ve seen in the past two seasons that coach and GM Kevin Hasselberg and his staff place a lot of importance on recruiting good players but also good people.
I’ve been informed that there will actually just be one intersquad game and it will be on Tuesday at the Civic Center.
Personally, I am looking forward to Tuesday. That’s now when the first and only North Stars inter-squad games will take place at the Civic Center. I think that’s when I will start to get a better feel for the players that are in North Stars camp and who is starting to impress.
It’s a great time of year with a lot of excitement for the team and the players. I feel that excitement as well. I am looking forward to seeing the returning guys (especially those great kids from BC!!) and just getting back to blogging, tweeting, watching and enjoying hockey. Once I get back in that Civic Center this afternoon I know the itch to get up in the booth and start broadcasting will really hit me, and I can’t wait.
