Injured – Matt Sheeran, Kyle Schmidt, Troy Petrick
(Sheeran is working his way back after his injury last season. Schmidt is likely out for a few weeks and Petrick is still in BC doing physiotherapy on his hip. Petrick was acquired in a trade last season around December but got hurt shortly after and fans are still waiting on his arrival. It should be a couple more weeks and then Petrick will be in town. )

I think the teams changed a little at times but that was the roster I was given on Saturday when I got to the rink. The first thing that jumped out at me was the size. This looks like it’s going to be a bigger team than last season. There is still plenty of skill as well. But plenty of size. The other thing that is noticeable is the depth. Quantity and quality. On defense there are several returning guys to go along with a couple of young guys who saw time as APs last season in Lacoursiere and Sych. Plus Hamilton and Charleson who are both large and Erickson can really skate. There are going to be lots of tough decisions for the coaches as the preseason continues.

Up front you’ve got 8 returning guys, 9 who played for the Stars last season as Nick Fountain was re-acquired. You’ve got another couple in Carlson and Petrino who played Junior A last season. Petrino in the MJHL and Carlson in the AJHL. Petrino was the futures in the Waskewitch trade with OCN and Carlson was recently picked up in a trade with Lloydminster. There are also some Midget aged guys and some locals who looked good out there as well. Big Igor Leonenko the Belarussian had people talking with his size and hands. Brenden Heinrich played a handful of games in the BCHL with Trail. Plus some 1995 born players from Alberta. So all in all a lot of depth and talent on this team.

And I haven’t mentioned North Stars players who are trying out with other teams. Josh Betinol and Luke McColgan trying to track USHL rosters as well as Casey Parker and Kendall Fransoo in the WHL. We wish all of those guys all the best in their attempts to make those leagues.

Kendall Fransoo should be back with the North Stars this week.

Now on to today’s rookie game in Kindersley.

The lineup:

G – Kotchorek
G – Rewerts

D – Erickson – Lacoursiere
D – Spagrud – Shynkaruk
D – Hamilton – Hillis

F – Gerein – Delainey – Hagel
F – Nachtegaele – Desjarlais – Henri
F – Mauws – Laframboise – Burton
F – Cubbon – Lesko – Reddin

Most of those guys are players to watch for the future and will return to their midget teams after the game. I spoke with coach Hasselberg tonight when the bus returned to the Civic Center. He said he was really impressed with camp this year and with the players. They came to camp in great shape and all played well. He also said he enjoyed being back behind the bench and working with these young guys in today’s game.

The Stars lost 2-1 with Rewerts allowing both goals. Kotchorek did not allow a goal in his spell in net. Sounds like both guys played well. Rylan Mauws scored the game’s lone goal for the North Stars. Burton and Laframboise drew the assists.

So now training camp is over the North Stars move into pre-season mode. They will not be on the ice tomorrow and will return with practice and a controlled scrimmage on Tuesday. There will not be a black and white intersquad game this year. The Stars play on the road this week with exhibition games against the Augustana Vikings in Camrose Alberta on Thursday and against Kindersley in Wainwright Alberta on Saturday.

Interestingly, the North Stars only had a little over 30 players in camp but they could easily ice a team this year with players who have some Junior A experience. So like I said, a lot of experience and depth. The coaching staff is in tough to make cuts to this team over the next couple weeks. There are young players knocking on the door and competition for spots is going to be fierce.

Will be interesting to see what happens, with the 20-year old situation. With 9,2 have to go.

    • 3 of them are currently injured. I believe you can have as many 20s as you want. It’s only a restriction on how many can be in the lineup at one time.

Is there a lineup for tonights game?

    • Unfortunately with the game being in Camrose which is 3 hours away and because I work tomorrow morning at 5am I won’t be able to make the trip. I’m afraid I won’t have a lot of updates this preseason with most of the preseason games being so far away.
