North Stars lose 7-3 in Yorkton

The defenses and the goaltenders were on top in the first period as neither team could find a way to get the puck to the back of the net. The best chance of the period came late when Casey Parker stoned Tyler Giebel who was in alone on a break away. That great glove save seemed to give the North Stars some momentum.

Igor Leonenko fired a one timer past Kale Thomson early in the second period to get the Stars on the board. That power play marker made for the 4th straight game in which Leonenko has scored. Spencer Gosselin and Latrell Charleson drew assists and it was Gosselin who made the nice cross ice pass that teed up Igor. The Terriers responded on a break down in the North Stars zone. It looked like a lack of communication as the Stars defense went back for the puck. No one took it and the Terriers were able to steal. Ellis got it out front to Enzie who went to the back hand to score. 2 minutes late Gervais fired a beauty of a cross ice pass to set up Chase Norrish for his second of the year. A beautiful one timer that went bar down and past Parker. Blake Young had a strong game once again and he had a chance to tie the game. But walking off the wall he rang one off the crossbar.

The Terriers then extended their lead. Yorkton captain Devon McMullen scored his first of the year and it was 3-1 late in the second. It looked like that would be the way things would end after 40 but Austin Evans made a nice pass into the stride of Blake Young. He hopped around the defense and got in alone. Young slid the puck home through the five hole on Thomson. That goal came with less than a minute to go and made it 3-2 heading to the third.

Early in the third the game turned on a North Stars 5 on 3 power play. Instead of tying the game the Stars fell further behind. Tayler Thompson stole the puck and got a chance for a 2 on 1. Luke McColgan was on the point on the 5 on 3 advantage and was the lone North Star back. Thompson showed great patience as he out waited McColgan. Once the pass was taken away Thompson took one more stride into the slot and fired past Parker. Tanner Quinn scored during some 4 on 4 play later in the period. A great effort that sparked his team. Ryne Keller and Blake Young each had a great chance after Quinn’s goal to pull the Stars within 1. They couldn’t finish those chances though and eventually the Terriers pulled away ending up with 4 goals in the final period to win 7-3.

Yorkton ended up going 2 for 5 on the power play with both markers coming in the 3rd.

So Kyle Schmidt and Matt Sheeran return to the lineup but come out on the losing end. Alex Bechtold had a strong first game and his line with Quinn and Greenaway were rewarded with plenty of third period ice time. They worked hard and earned that ice time. Keller, Young and Evans also played a lot in the final period.

The North Stars are in Melville tonight for a game against the Millionaires. The Mills are 2-0 so far against the North Stars this season. The Stars will look to get things going in the right direction as well as exact some revenge on the Mills tonight at 7:30.
