North Stars streaking

The Battlefords North Stars have won 4 in a row after a 4-3 overtime win in La Ronge last night.

The Stars came out a little flat despite a couple of big hits in the first period. Jackson Bond had a big hit in the opening frame as did Connor Vermeulen. But the Ice Wolves were probably the better team. And they had a 2-1 lead after the period was over. Jared Iron opened the scoring but the Stars responded with an opening goal from Jackson Bond. Michael Statchuk did good work down low to get the puck to Nick Fountain and he sent Jordan Townsend on a 2-on-1 with Jackson Bond. Townsend’s pass found Bond who found the back of the net. But the Ice Wolves got another before the period was over. Matthew Painchuad threw a puck towards the goal that may have been going wide but it went through the 5-hole on Tremblay and hit his leg before re-directing into the back of the net.

The Ice Wolves made it 3-1 in the second on a power play one timer from Dave Randall. But after that the Stars took over. For close to a 10 minute stretch late in the second the Ice Wolves could barely get out of their own zone.

The Stars capitalized as they created chance after chance. Saharchuk’s good work down low turned a puck over and he fed Delainey. The Stars forward could have shot but chose to slide the puck to Brady O’Sullivan who beat Kris Joyce with a back hander along the ice after a deke move.

Later in the frame Townsend and Bond teamed up to find Fountain in the slot. Founts made no mistake beating Joyce over the glove to make it 3-3. That was the end of the scoring in regulation. There were chances for both teams in the third but neither team could find the back of the net.

It took an over time winner from Michael Statchuk to separate the teams. Stats with a low shot over the pad and under the glove of Joyce. Townsend drew an assist for his third point of the game. Bond and Fountain each had a goal and an assist and Spencer Tremblay ended up with 34 saves for the win.

The Stars went 0-2 on the power play and should have had more chances. And they also killed off a late Ice Wolves power play in the third. That’s the kind of up and down game, come back, adverse situation win that helps build a team. And a happy bus back to North Battleford is a nice bonus as well.

Keep in mind the North Stars are off to a 4-1-1 start with Smith, Leonenko, and McMillen banged up. Tonight, Jake Erickson and Matt Havens were also out of the lineup. And the Stars are still finding ways to win. We have talked about their depth a lot early in the season and it’s proven to be true.

Next up the North Stars host Kindersley at the Civic Center on Tuesday night. They finally return home and the home crowd is in for a treat because when this team plays their best it is incredibly fun.

Canadian Tire 3 Stars: 3) Michael Statchuk 2) Nick Fountain 1) Jordan Townsend
Sanberg Collision Collision of the game: Kurtis Redding in the third for standing up an Ice Wolves player who tried to throw a big check, bounced off Redding and spun into the side boards.
