Last game recap: – The North Stars won a wild one versus Kindersley. Check the recap here:

  • The Break: The Stars haven’t played since they took on Kindersley over a week ago. Since then the Klippers have played 3 games as they went to Yorkton and Melville for a 3 game trip and posting a 1-0-1-1 record. Earlier this season it was the Stars who had been playing lots and the Klippers who had more time off. It didn’t seem to make a big difference and I don’t think tonight’s game will be impacted by the schedule. The only area where it could potentially? Early. If the Stars can get moving and up to speed right away though it shouldn’t be a factor.
  • Kramer Division: With Kindersley in 11th in the CJHL top 20 and Notre Dame ranked 4th. There are two teams from the Kramer in the CJHL national rankings. The North Stars are an honourable mention. That’s three teams from the Kramer. There are no other SJHL teams on the list currently. That shows how strong the Kramer Division has been so far. It’s still early and there’s a lot of season left but right now it’s looking tough in the Kramer for sure.
  • First Place: If the North Stars win in regulation they take over first place in the Kramer. If Kindersley gets even just one point they remain in first place. Because Flin Flon is taking on Melfort one of those teams will collect points tonight so the Stars can’t claim first place in the league with a regulation win. Kindersley can remain in first in the SJHL if they get a point. Coming into tonight’s game no team in the SJHL has more points in their last 10 games than the Stars who have a 7-1-2-0 record in their last 10 games. The Stars and Bombers currently on the longest streaks as each has gone 5 games without losing in regulation.
  • Rivalry Cup: First time this season with an update on the Rivalry Cup. The North Stars now have 6 points in games head to head with Kindersley. The Klippers have 7 points. There are 3 games left in the season series counting tonight. So no one can win the Cup tonight. If the North Stars win tonight in it would guarantee that the Rivalry Cup will be decided in the final game of the season.
  • Scoring Changes: Periodically coach Hasselberg will send clips to the league to get scoring plays changed. He uses video a lot as a coaching tool and does a lot of work “clipping” games. So the North Stars stats a few times a season will change pretty dramatically as scoring plays that are called wrong at the time are fixed. To be honest, refs have a tough job and figuring out the assists on goals isn’t a top priority They have other things to worry about. So scoring plays are often a little off. Not a big deal but because of that, Reed Delainey is now the team’s leading scorer. Brady O’Sullivan is now in the top 10 in the league as is Saharchuk. Currently the North Stars stats are right up to date. Check them out they make for fun reading.

Other Notes:

  • Last game’s Canadian Tire 3 Stars: 3) Ryan Rewerts 2) Owen LaClare 1) Nick Fountain
  • Last game’s Sanberg Collision Collision of the Game: Kendall Fransoo standing up Kolby Johnson
  • Head to Head: Kindersley is 3-1-0-1 versus the North Stars so far. The Stars are 2-1-2 versus Kindersley.
Scoring leaders: LaClare (KIN) 8-PTS, Delainey (BATT) 7-PTS
    Battlefords 4 @ Kindersley 3 (Oct 21 2014)
    Kindersley 3 @ Battlefords 2 OT (Oct 7 2014)
    Battlefords 2 @ Kindersley 1 SO (Sep 27 2014)
    Battlefords 3 @ Kindersley 4 OT (Sep 20 2014)
    Kindersley 5 @ Battlefords 2 (Sep 19 2014)
  • Power Rankings: The Klippers were first in last week’s SJHL power rankings but dropped to 6th. The North Stars are now 2nd. The Klippers are 11th in the CJHL national rankings with the North Stars an honourable mention in the article but not in the top 20.
  • Out of Town Scoreboard: Flin Flon at Melfort (The Stars, Klippers, Bombers and Mustangs are the 4 highest scoring teams in the league so far this season. So there should be goals in the game’s tonight.)

Some Keys for the Stars:

1) 60  – The North Stars showed last time out versus Kindersley just how good they can be. Unfortunately they weren’t as god in the second period as they were in the first. That was partly due to a little penalty trouble. And then in the third the Stars struggled. If they play at top speed for a full 60 they will be tough to stop.

2) Stop LaClare – The Kindersley offense is in the top 4 in the league in terms of goals scored. Owen LaClare leads the team with 11. In head to head games LaClare has scored 6 goals versus the North Stars and chipped in 2 assists. So he’s been in on 50% (8 out of 16) of the goals that Kindersley has scored against the Stars this season. If the Stars can stop him, and LaClare is on a hot streak with goals in 3 straight games, they have a great chance to win.

3) Hit Ground Running – After a bit of an extended break I am sure the Stars will be itching to get back into a game. It’s important that they get off to a good start and having not played in a while that means pregame preparations are key.

North Stars Lineup:

Statchuk – Sych
Erickson – Vermeulen
Fransoo – Keller

Fountain – Bond – Townsend
Saharchuk – Delainey – O’Sullivan
Havens – McMillen – Heinrich
Kanter – Smith – Mitchell

Scratches: Weston, Calverley, Nachtegaele, Leonenko
