The Battlefords North Stars skated off with a 4-3 shootout win last night in Melfort.

It didn’t look good early though as the North Stars fell behind 2-0 less than 2 minutes into the game. Tristan Frei opened the scoring as he snapped a shot past Spencer Tremblay off the rush. The first shot of the game and the Mustangs were on the board. Moments later Landon Robin stole the puck from Tremblay behind the net. Then he threw the puck out front. It hit the skate of Tremblay and bounced into the net. That made it 2-0 at the 18:22 mark of the opening frame. The North Stars made the goalie change and Ryan Rewerts found himself in the net.

Rewerts then shut the door for the rest of the period. Matt Havens drew a penalty as he used his speed through the neutral zone and was chopped down. On the ensuing power play Reed Delainey snuck in off the point and was found by a combination of Matt Saharchuk and Brady O’Sullivan who had combined to good effect down low. Delainey fired the puck home and despite being heavily outplayed the Stars were within an goal.

Late in the period a bouncing puck at the North Stars blueline got past Riley Boomgarden. Nick Fountain was then able to poke the puck to Jackson Bond who was in allow. He made it look like he was going to make a deke or a fake and then snapped a shot over the blocker of Zach DeGraves.

That made it 2-2 after the first period. In taht period there were plenty of hits and Kendall Fransoo was involved in several of them both giving and receiving a couple of big checks. Baxter Kanter threw the SanBerg Collision of the game in the first as he wiped out Eric Sinclair.

The second period was a little more tight checking and scrambled. It was almost as if the North Stars were trying to change the pace of the game as they found their feet. Their PK was solid in last night’s game killing a couple of middle frame penalties to keep the game tied at 2.

In the third, Matt Havens had a great chance off a face-off that was turned away. That line was pretty good despite not hitting the scoresheet. Brenden Heinrich was all over the ice and was named the game’s second star by yours truly. Jordan Townsend was rodbbed in the third with a great chance in the slot. He got another chance later in the period and buried to make it 3-2. Jake Erickson’s point shot hit traffic and dropped to Townsend who roofed a back hand shot to give the Stars the lead.

The Mustangs tied it less than a minute later as a shot from the left point beat Rewerts. It was the only shot that got past Rewerts. Luc Lemire’s 3rd goal of the year forced overtime.

In OT, Jake McMillen was set up back door on a nice feed from Heinrich but could not drag a shot towards goal and it slid just wide. Neither team could score and we went to a shootout.

The Stars first three shooters couldn’t score. Matt Havens missed, Reed Delainey hit the crossbar after beating DeGraves and Brady O’Sullivan’s attempt to go 5-hole was stopped. The Mustangs couldn’t beat Rewerts either. His best was a glove save off Adam Fauchoux. Justin Boyer had the puck roll off his back hand with a chance to win the game. Jake McMillen then stepped up and replicated Jackson Bond by going up under the bar with a snapshot over the blocker. Nick Hermary then shot for Melfort and made too many moves. He deked so much that he was moving very slowly and the puck rolled away without a shot.

That gave the Stars the win despite falling behind 2-0 early, being outshot 35-21 and not playing very well for the first twenty at least. Next up the North Stars take on Yorkton tomorrow night at the Civic Center.
